Do you ever feel like you have a million decisions to make? You wake up and have to decide what to wear, what to eat and what you have to do that day. Starting your morning with a stressful decision can affect the choices you make the rest of the day.
Some of the worlds brightest minds have opted for a work uniform.
Steve Jobs was one of our generations greatest minds wore a black turtle neck every day.
Mark Zuckerberg the founder of Facebook wears a grey t-shirt and jeans.
Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, wears tailored dresses with minimal jewellery.
Albert Einstein wore copies of the same suit.
Even the “father of fashion,” Karl Lagerfeld had a work uniform: a black suit, white shirt, sunglasses, gloves.
The goal of the work uniform?
To reduce stress and save brain power for more important decisions. This concept which we call have experienced is “The Paradox of Choice.” Barry Schwartz, an American psychologist and the Dorwin Cartwright Professor of Social Theory and Social Action at Swarthmore College, defined the paradox of choice as having too many choices causes you to feel less happiness, less satisfaction and can even lead to paralysis. "The paradox of choice is simply that although choice is good, you can have too much of a good thing. When people have too many options, they're paralysed instead of liberated, and make worse decisions. And even when they make good decisions, they are less satisfied with them." Essentially, the paradox of choice is that the diversity of our choices cause us stress and, ultimately, a feeling of trapped unhappiness.
With life already stressful enough, why would you want to add any unnecessary stresses to your life?
Michael Kors stated “I don’t care what you do for a living; I don’t care how old you are. What everyone is lacking in the world is time. So if you can find a uniform that makes you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin and you’re able to get dressed in less time, that’s a game changer.”
“You don’t understand how much time and effort you put into clothing until you don’t have to think about clothing at all,” Art Director in NYC, Matilda Kahl.
